5 Tips for Planning Your Motherhood Session

Planning a motherhood session may be one of the top things your future self will thank you for. I love that these sessions capture the unique, special bond between you and your child while they are still young an amazed with everything you do. Here are some of my favorite tips for planning a motherhood session for you and your little loves.

  1. Plan on interacting with your child in ways you normally would. These sessions are really simple in nature and are focused on the bond between you and your child. All you need to do is plan on interacting with your child in ways you already do (i.e. snuggles, kisses, singing favorite songs, exploring together, tickles, etc.).
  2. Bring snacks. It’s always a good idea to have something your child can nibble on if the need arises. Just make sure it’s something you don’t mind having in photos and are easy to hide in their/your hands (such as cheerios).
  3. Bring a sentimental toy, book, etc. Try bringing along a favorite stuffed animal to occupy you child’s hands or a book to read together while you sit/stand in place.
  4. Plan on moving at your child’s pace. I never like to force anything during our time together. Sometimes it takes a child a while to warm up to a stranger or maybe they have a hard time sitting still. I prefer to let children lead the pace of our sessions so that they are comfortable. If we need to sit in once place or if explore everything around us, we lean into what interests them. This makes for the most natural photos and enjoyable experience.
  5. Choose wardrobe that is comfortable. These sessions often involve a lot of getting up and down and you get down on your child’s level or swoop them up in your arms. Plan on wearing something you can easily move around in and wardrobe that your child feels comfortable in as well (i.e. if your child never wears dresses or hates pants, photo day is not the day to force them into them).

When it comes down to planning and personalizing your own session, I promise to be there every step of the way to guide you. After all is prepped and ready to go, all you need to do is show up, relax and have fun. I’ll handle the rest!

If you’re looking for a Portland family photographer to give you a custom motherhood portrait experience, I’d love to help you create exactly what you’re envisioning. I promise to help you every step of the way and get you the artwork you’ve always dreamed of so your memories are preserved for the long-haul. Please reach out if you’d like me to help you document this season for you. I’d love to work with you!
