How to Choose the Perfect Outfits for Fall Family Photos

Fall is my favorite time for family photos in Portland, OR. The warm colors and cozy sweaters make me giddy. As an experienced family photographer, I’m always asked for advice on choosing the right wardrobe. For most parents, the decisions can feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. The outfits you choose will ensure that everyone looks polished and impact the overall vibes of your photos. Here’s what I suggest to help get you started planning the perfect outfits for fall family photos.

  1. CHOOSE A COLOR PALETTE
The first step in planning your wardrobe is choosing a color palette. Earthy and jewel tones work wonderfully against the fall backdrop. Neutrals should always be incorporated to balance out the warm, bold colors. Choose 2-3 colors to mix across everyone’s outfits to create a cohesive look.
  2. UTILIZE LAYERS
Layering adds visual interest to your photos. Think knit sweaters, corduroy pants, denim jackets, scarves, and cardigans. These items all add depth to your photos, many of which can be added or removed as needed to help mix up your look through your session.
  3. MIX PATTERNS
Patterns can add personality to your photos. Plaids, florals, and subtle stripes are all great choices. This is also an example of when a little can go a long way. Be mindful to not overwhelm the photos with too many patterns. Keeping things balanced with solid colors is advised.
  4. COORDINATE, BUT DON’T “MATCH”
Aim to coordinate your colors instead of matching. This means selecting outfits that complement each other without being identical. For example, one person can have a mustard jacket and another can wear a dress with mustard details in it’s pattern. Try laying out everyone’s outfits side by side to help you visualize and make sure nothing feels out of place.
  5. CONSIDER THE LOCATION
Your photo location plays a big role in the final outcome of your family photos. Consider the location choice when determining wardrobe. If you’ll be somewhere with a lot of colorful leaves, try to keep your wardrobe focused on neutrals so you aren’t competing with the background. If your location is more neutral, like an open field, you can utilize richer colors. Your wardrobe should complement the environment.
  6. AIM FOR COMFORT
I get it, you want everyone to look nice. But, comfort should not be sacrificed – especially for little kids. If someone is uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Have everyone try on their outfits ahead of time to ensure every item fits and feels good. Happy kids make for happy photos. Don’t force them to wear something they don’t like and make sure they can easily move around.
  7. ACCESSORIZE MINIMALLY
Accessories can add a personal touch to photos. But once again, less is more. Don’t overdo it. Consider hats, scarves, and jewelry to add visual elements. For kids, a bow or bracelet can make them look extra precious without adding in distractions.
  8. CHOOSE FOOTWEAR WISELY
Make sure everyone’s shoes are clean and in good condition. They will likely be visible in photos and should not be overlooked. Choose shoes that complement the overall wardrobe vibes and are practical for your chosen location. Boots are great for fall photos and can work well with most wardrobe choices.
  9. PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED
Fall weather in Portland can be unpredictable. Be ready to adjust if needed. This means bringing extra layers that you don’t mind having in photos if necessary and/or blankets and umbrellas. If you’re worried about being too chilly, you can add hand warmers in shoes and pockets so keep comfortable during your session.

Choosing the right wardrobe for your family doesn’t have to be stressful. By utilizing these tips, you can create a look that is timeless and comfortable for everyone. As always, I’m happy to help with wardrobe planning in preparation for your session.
