5 Tips for Planning Your Fall Family Photos

Fall is the most magical time of year in my opinion. The crisp air and cozy sweater vibes are life giving while strolling amongst vibrant foliage. Rich colors and falling leaves make for perfect backdrops for family photos. To capture your memories this year in Portland, it’s time to get started planning now. Here are five tips to help you plan for your fall family photos.

  1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION
Fall offers beautiful backdrops around every corner. Choosing the right location for your family isn’t difficult this time of year. Consider gardens or places with rows of trees that highlight the colors of the season. Settings paired with brick walls or waterways can also complement the autumn aesthetic really beautifully. While I have a handful of favorite locations myself, I’m always happy to explore with my clients to find the perfect spot.
  2. COORDINATE YOUR OUTFITS
Choose a color palette that compliments the season and coordinate the family’s wardrobe. Warm, earthy tones are perfect for this time of year as well as neutrals. Creams, mustard, navy, and olive are all gorgeous paired with fall backdrops. Layers are also suggested to add texture and depth – plus, they keep everyone warm in the chilly weather.
  3. PREPARE FOR WEATHER
It’s no secret that Portland fall weather can be unpredictable. Plan for chilly temps, rain, and wind. This is where extra layers come in handy so be thinking of how your outer layers (i.e. jackets, scarves, etc.) can be easily added or removed as needed as well as how they will photograph. Bring along umbrellas and be prepared to get cozy if we end up with a drizzle. Don’t forget to consider footwear that will keep you and the kids from slipping and soggy.
  4. USE MINIMAL PROPS
I tend to believe less is more when it comes to props. If you’re going to include any, I suggest keeping things simple and meaningful. A textured blanket or cups of cocoa can add fun elements when interacting together without being distracting or taking the focus away from your family.
  5. BOOK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER EARLY
Fall is known to be the most popular time of year for family photos in Portland and photographers book up quickly. Reach out to your photographer in advance to secure your spot on their calendar. This also gives ample time for planning ahead without feeling rushed and can help your vision fully come to life.

Fall family photos are a great way to capture the warmth and beauty of the season. Thoughtful planning ensures we can create the timeless images that you’re dreaming of. Get started planning today and you’ll be on your way to a stress-free and enjoyable photo session.
